Lemna - Urge Theory (Horo, 2017)
Ouch, what a record. Lemna (Japan’s Maiko Okimoto) makes her debut on Horo. Her sounds betray an eternity of hard work. Deep and wrought. The rhythm controlled. Embracing the darkness. A bass that punches through the magma and wounds brutally. Without a splash. The tempos slow down. Or is that just an impression. A war of attrition through the addictive monotony of the bass. A rarely heard purity. Sounds to absorb and be absorbed by. An EP to fall in love with. DLPFC’ is more frivolous than ‘Dice’, but ‘Metamorphosis’ is more relentless. Blot’ is the samurai sword. Razor sharp. If you’re not careful, you’ll be quartered before the last beat is complete. The beats are pretty tight. Urge Theory’ is pure, brooding tension.
