Hüma Utku - Comfort Of The Shadows (Editions Mego, 2025)
What an immensely moving, bombastic musique noire. Hüma Utku drew inspiration from her early motherhood and the accompanying pregnancy — a life stage typically portrayed in saccharine pink hues. On ‘Dracones’, however, she ventures into the darkness of the fairytale paradise, occasionally illuminated. Experimental electronica steeped in an industrial baptismal font. She sources sounds for her swirling electronics, among other things, from her own ultrasound recordings — giving new life to her album as she gives life to a child. ‘Dracones’ sounds ominous, brimming with anxiety and uncertainty — yet it fully illuminates as the final track begins. The hidden becomes visible. The initial fear is palpable — and yet, there is comfort. Impressive release.
